Description

In celebration of Black History Month, Feirstein Association of Black & Brown Filmmakers presents our month-long inaugural screening event. This month's theme? "Lost & Found: The Gems of Black Indie Film".

Kathleen Collins, Bill Gunn, and Horace B. Jenkins were Black filmmakers creating film in a time where it was radical to move the imagery of Blackness away from the Blaxploitation gaze and into a more contemporary, intimate lens of Black living. Unfortunately, these filmmakers passed before their films could make the proper stamps in the world of cinema at that time, and footage of their films "lost". It wasn't until 30+ years later that not only were these films found, but remastered and screened throughout the country, the brilliance of these late Black filmmakers' work revived and remembered.

We will be hosting screenings for each filmmaker's films:

  • "Losing Ground," by Kathleen Collins (February 7th)

  • "Personal Problems," by Bill Gunn (February 14th)

  • "Cane River," by Horace B. Jenkins (February 21nd)

After each screening, we will open up a discussion amongst audience members, allowing for a dialogue that discusses the filmmaker behind the film, their story, and analyzes the film we watched.

And on February 28th, we will hold a roundtable discussion titled "The Black Film Continuum," about the evolution of film distribution, along with the ways in which we can fund, distribute, and PRESERVE our stories in the digital age we are in now.
