About this Event

Mr. Esperancilla was born in Iloilo. He joined the US Navy in 1925. From 1929 to 1955, he worked in the White House and on Presidential yachts as a Navy Steward and served four US Presidents: Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman (in photo with Mr. Esperancilla) and Eisenhower. He was present at some of the most important events of the 20th century. Join us as Melinda Dart, Mr. Esperancilla’s granddaughter, shares stories from his remarkable life.

About the speaker:

As the granddaughter and daughter of US Navy sailors, Melinda Dart spent her childhood just outside of Washington, DC in Oxon Hill. Her father, Johnny Paje, was also assigned to the White House, so Melinda has many wonderful memories of life in the nation's capital. She left the area to serve a short tour in the US Army, and is now an Adult ESL teacher in Chesterfield, VA where she lives with her husband (retired Army) and three children. Her work as an educator has also supported the children of military families and she won a grant from Youth Service America recently. She is currently at work on a book documenting the fascinating life of Mr. Esperancilla, her grandfather.
