Legal Defense (LDF) insurance coverage is available to Peace Officers through the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC). This insurance provides for the assignment and payment of an attorney for participating Deputies who become the subject of an internal affairs investigation or a criminal investigation while working within the scope of their employment.
THE DSA STRONGLY URGES ALL EXTRA-HELP DEPUTIES TO ENROLL IN AND MAINTAIN LDF PLAN IV INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR OWN PROTECTION!
The DSA has LDF Plan I (Full-time) and LDF Plan IV (Reserves, Extra-help) coverage. Through the collection of union dues, the DSA enrolls and pays for LDF Plan I coverage for its full-time Members. Extra-help Deputies are also eligible for LDF Plan IV coverage through us but are responsible for paying for their own coverage.
Traditionally, each November the DSA collects the LDF fees from Extra-help Deputies who want LDF coverage. The DSA Treasurer then signs them up. The DSA will continue doing this each year beginning around the first of November. The enrollment period will end on December 1st each year, and all enrollments will be completed by the Treasurer on or before January 1st .
The DSA will be doing this again this year. In the past the Court Security DSA Director-at-Large was responsible for collecting a check from each Extra-help Deputy. This has been challenging for both the DSA Rep and the Deputy. As a result, we will no longer be collecting checks as payment. From this point forward the DSA will collect the info and payments from people for Extra-help LDF payments through this website campaign only. This process is simple and easy and we feel everyone will find it better.
In order to enroll in LDF, you must also be a member of PORAC. the fees to enroll are as follows:
+ PORAC Membership fee $10.00 / quarter ($40.00 / year)
+ LDF Plan IV Fee: $4.50 / month ($54.00 / yr.) (Covers Reserves / 960 / Part Time Officers – Civil, Criminal and Limited Administrative Coverage)

If you would like the DSA to enroll or re-enroll you in PORAC LDF, please choose one of the following options below, complete the registration process here and make your payment. The DSA Treasurer will then complete your LDF enrollment for you. You will receive a confirmation email from the Treasurer once your enrollment is complete so you know it's been handled.
LDF OPTION 1: Choose this option if you came to the Sheriff's Office as an extra-help Deputy after retiring from another agency.
LDF OPTION 2: As a retired DSA Member, the DSA pays the $40.00 annual PORAC Membership fee for you. Choose this option if you were ever a dues-paying DSA Member who retired from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
The DSA is required to pay service fees to collect your credit payments and use this website. We are charging a a flat $6.00 fee (included in your payment) to cover these costs.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mike Vail at (707) 695-0066 and he will assist you.
