Event description

Description

Before “Billionaire’s Row" and the mansions of Fifth Avenue, New York’s wealthiest and most influential families came together to reside in what was the most exclusive neighborhood before the Civil War.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the historic neighborhood of NoHo (North of Houston Street), formerly known as Lafayette Place. This short, narrow street was carved out in 1825 under the direction of America’s first millionaire, John Jacob Astor, to attract New York’s most prominent families.

Led by neighborhood expert Michael Rayhill, who has lectured and conducted extensive research on the area, our unique experience will include:

  • A discussion around how the small neighborhood of NoHo transformed from a rural tract into an enclave for NYC’s elite families
  • Stories and tales of former Lafayette Place residents including the Astors, Livingstons, Langdons, Wards, LeRoys, Stevens, Delanos, Morgans, and Gardiners
  • Weaving through side streets to see and learn about the 19th-century buildings that have survived, and those that have been lost
  • A rare trip inside Colonnade Row — a landmarked series of Greek revival buildings originally built in the early 1830s that once housed New York’s most elite society members, including John Jacob Astor II and Washington Irving

*Please bring water and comfortable shoes as we’ll be on our feet for the duration of the tour!

About Michael Rayhill

Michael attended Pratt Institute for interior design, and wrote his college thesis on Colonnade Row in Lafayette Place. His fascination with the building started while at RW2 and Sofield, and grew with investigating the cultural underpinnings of antebellum New York and the Colonnade’s contribution to New York’s eventual Gilded Age.
