Event description

Description

June 15th is one of those days in NYC history. In 1904, more than a thousand people boarded a boat in lower Manhattan, heading for a church picnic on Long Island — only 321 of them would return. This is the story of the General Slocum disaster, and how New York Harbor, the ferry industry, and a community were forever altered.

Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part aquatic trip as we explore the General Slocum disaster, and historic sights and stories along the East River, all by NYC Ferry.

Led by NYC water-front expert Mitch Waxman, our unique experience on the water will include:

  • An overview of the 1904 General Slocum disaster and how a small fire onboard resulted in one of NYC's greatest losses of life, scarring an entire generation
  • A trip up the East River on the NYC Ferry Soundview Route to follow the exact path the ill-fated General Slocum took over 100 years ago
  • A return ferry trip down the East River to discuss various sights of interest, from North Brother Island (where Typhoid Mary was quarantined), to Hell Gate Bridge, to LaGuardia Airport

See you there!

*Two, one-way NYC Ferry tickets to/from Pier 11 & Soundview are not included — we recommend purchasing tickets on your phone, or at Pier 11, before the tour begins. Each direction is $2.75.

**The majority of our experience will take place on the top deck of the NYC Ferry, so please dress appropriately, and wear sunscreen!
