Description

Exploring multilingualism through the arts: A creative conversation

A free one day conversation event, exploring multi-lingualism and translanguaging with artists and researchers from 5 UK universities, at Aston Hall, Birmingham on Friday 26th January 2018 10am – 4pm.

'The research will make a significant contribution to knowledge about the potential of multilingualism as a resource for communication, creativity, and civic participation.' Professor Angela Creese, Principal Investigator of the project: Translation and Translanguaging: Investigating Linguistic and Cultural Transformations in Superdiverse Wards in Four UK Cities (TLANG)

TLANG is a four year research project exploring how people communicate multilingually across diverse languages, contexts and cultures. We want to share our findings with you and explore how our research can connect with your interests and practice. In October 2017, we ran a 2 day creative arts lab, led by independent artistic director Orit Azaz, bringing together TLANG academic researchers with a small group of artists working in different artistic disciplines to exchange practice and begin to explore potential for collaboration. This one day event continues our conversation with artists, creative practitioners, cultural leaders and activists and anyone else interested in celebrating diversity and multilingualism in our cities. We hope you will:

a) gain an understanding of the TLANG research and our practice as linguistic ethnographers

b) explore how the themes and findings of our research can be relevant to you and your practice, through discussion and practical artist led activity

c) contribute to the Creative Arts Lab and our enquiry into how working with artists can help academics to maximise the impact that our research has in society

Places are free but limited so please confirm your attendance. Lunch will be provided.

An overview of TLANG project is included below or you can visit the project website: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/generic/tlang/about/index.aspx and project blog: https://tlangblog.wordpress.com/

On behalf of the TLANG team, I look forward to meeting you then.
