Description

Imagine an island in New York City where cars aren't allowed, people play on 70-foot hills, and stepping inside abandoned buildings is perfectly acceptable — welcome to Governors Island.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore Governors Island, which has been home to Native American fishing camps, Dutch West India Company settlement, British garrison, American Army HQ, Confederate Prison of War, Coast Guard Installation, and much more.

Led by historian Kevin Draper, our unique experience will include:

  • An overview of Governors Island and how it acquired its name even though no governors ever lived there
  • A visit to several historic American military fortifications including Fort Jay (1794), Castle Williams (1811), and South Battery (1812).
  • A look at the U.S. Army buildings and barracks abandoned in the 1960s including Liggett Hall (once the world's longest building), Colonel's Row, and The Admiral's House in Nolan Park (once home to military officers).
  • A walk past The Governor's House (the island's oldest surviving structure, ~1703)
  • A walk through Governors Island's newest public spaces including The Hills (four man-made hills ranging from 25-70 ft tall), The Play Lawn, and Hammock Grove

See you there!

*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking!

**While our meeting point is in Manhattan, attendees may also meet the group on Governors Island if more convenient (see confirmation email for more details).
