EXPLORING FUTURE REALITY 2018

Thursday, November 29th, 2018 | NYU Kimmel Center

Exploring Future Reality is NYC Media Lab's annual event focused on XR and future interfaces. Through discussions, startup pitches, interactive demos, and hands-on workshops, attendees will explore the impact of future interfaces on industry and society, including best practices for storytelling, prototyping, and distribution.

Resons to attend...

  • Aaron Luber, AR/VR Commercialization lead at Google, will deliver a keynote on new business models, content and trends in spatial computing.

  • Mainstage discussions will explore next-generation tools for designing and developing XR content, stories, experiences, and applications, including a special session on drones.

  • Emerging entrepreneurs from RLab, the first city-funded VR/AR center in the country, will deliver their pitch.

  • Hands-on workshops led by HTC, Adobe, Viacom, BBC, NBCUniversal and more will engage participants on topics from design thinking for companies to rapid prototyping with developer tools.

  • 30+ demos selected from university research labs and startup accelerators across the City will be on view in an science fair style, interactive expo.

9:00AM: Mainstage welcome and announcements.

9:15AM: Sneak Preview: RLab. Justin Hendrix, Executive Director, NYC Media Lab and Interim Executive Director of RLab will highlight what's next for the first city-funded VR/AR center in the country.

9:45AM. Discussion: Next Generation Tools for Authoring VR/AR

From new tools for the capture of objects and motion to fast prototyping platforms to AI and deep learning methods for the automatic generation of content, the business of building AR and VR content is changing. This panel will look at the next generation of tools for XR content. With speakers:

  • Jacob Loewenstein, Samsung NEXT

  • Amir Baradaran, Columbia University

10:30AM: Startup pitches!

Hear from the first cohort of startups to emerge from RLab, the first city-funded virtual and augmented reality center in the country, located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Teams in this session include:

  • AIR|VR, Pratt Institute. AIR|VR is developing a customizable software package that will allow for the activation of industrial robotics through the use of virtual reality. Robotics that coexist with trained personnel to complete dextrous and variable tasks.

  • Unseen Media, NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Adding value to the AR gaming experience through the addition of constant physical content.

  • Craft, NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Craft is a multi-modal solution to enable people with limited limb mobility to create art in the virtual environment using eye movements and voice commands

  • EchoAR, Columbia University. Cloud platform for augmented reality apps providing tools and server-side infrastructure that help companies build better AR apps and grow successful businesses.

  • Graceful Ray, Columbia University. Graceful Ray enables companies to bring the real world to virtual by creating photorealistic 3D content of any object or scene regardless of shape and material.

11:00AM: Coffee Break

11:25AM: Discussion: XR and Drones

One of the most exciting intersections in XR is with drones. From new methods for photogrammetry to new experiences in the headset, drones are opening up new opportunities for XR applications. With speakers:

  • Giuseppe Loianno, NYU Tandon School of Engineering

  • Brian Streem, CEO and Founder, Aerobo

  • Marcelle Hopkins, New York Times

11:55AM: Pitches continue with RLab startups:

  • ARC, Parsons School of Design. ARC empowers logistic professionals and handlers with augmented training tools using XR technology to increase the proficiency, safety, and transportation of cargo.

  • EZXR, CUNY Lehman College. Building solutions for legal professionals in trial preparation and strategy, using virtual and augmented reality

  • Lucida, Columbia University. Graceful Ray enables companies to bring the real world to virtual by creating photorealistic 3D content of any object or scene regardless of shape and material.

  • spARk, Columbia University Teachers College. An augmented reality, voice technology and tangible platform for STEAM subjects, that helps 9-13 year olds learn abstract concepts.

  • Parallux, NYU Future Reality Lab. Parallux delivers world class immersive entertainment to audiences of all sizes.

12:25PM: Keynote: Aaron Luber, AR/VR Commercialization lead at Google, will deliver a keynote on new business models, content and trends in spatial computing.
