Description

Did you know that the abolitionist movement and earliest demand for religious freedom in America began in Flushing, Queens? Or that the neighborhood contains one of NYC’s largest Chinatowns?

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore Flushing, Queens, from historic sites that shaped our country’s cultural foundation to a Chinatown larger than Manhattan’s.

Led by Linda Fisher, a Queens resident for over 40 years, our unique experience will include:

  • A discussion around how Flushing, Queens evolved from a small dutch settlement to one of the largest and fastest growing ethnic Chinese enclaves outside of Asia.
  • A visit to historic sites around the neighborhood, including the homes where religious freedom and the abolitionist movements began, 200+ year old churches, and a former armory.
  • An overview of Flushing’s horticultural history, from the nation’s first commercial tree nurseries, whose customers included George Washington and Calvert Vaux, to the only tree in NYC to be landmarked (Weeping Beech).
  • A walk down side streets to peek inside bustling Asian shops and storefronts, with a trip inside some of the neighborhood’s famous Asian food courts, where many local and national franchises began
