Event description

Description

Exploring Eternity is a database using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and will give visitors to the Albany Rural Cemetery a chance to and link to grave locations, burial records, and photos by way of a smartphone.

Since 2012 the University of Albany Department of Geography and Planning has been digitizing the cemetery. Thanks to a grant from the Bender Family Foundation in 2018 over 70 individuals, family plots, and monuments will be highlighted by the launching of this software which will expand in the coming years.

This project highlights some of the key burial plots in the cemetery:

  • General Philip Schuyler, Revolutionary War Hero, and father-in-law to Alexander Hamilton
  • Anneke Bogardus Jans, wife of Roeliff Jansen, aunt to the wife of Jacob Leisler
  • Chester A. Arthur, 21st President of the United States
  • Erastus Corning II, Mayor of Albany
  • Stephen Van Rensselaer III, founder of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • Dr. Alden March, founder of Albany Medical Center
  • Kate Stoneman, the first female lawyer in New York State
  • Erastus Dow Palmer, world-renowned sculptor
  • James Burden, owner of Burden Iron Works and allowed the first women's union
  • Margarita "Peggy" Schuyler, one of the "Schuyler Sisters" highlighted in the Broadway Musical Hamilton
  • Thurlow Weed, publisher and founder of the Republican Party
  • Charles Fort, an author whose obsession with the paranormal, supernatural and unknown would be the foundation of the Fortean Society and be an inspiration for some science fiction
  • Gilbert Tucker, Titanic survivor, and Georgist author
  • James Bently “Cy” Seymour, American Major League center fielder and pitcher for the New York Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, and Boston Braves
  • Albany Almshouse, a mass burial site which was relocated to the cemetery in the early 2000s to make way for the NYS Department of Health David Axelrod Institute of Public Health
