Exploring Cultural Competency through the Arts

Friday, November 14, 2017 - 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Presented by Chicago Public Library's Teen Services Department in partnership with Chicago Public Schools' Department of Literacy: Libraries, this professional conference for Chicago-area educators who work with teens

  • Our morning keynote, presented by Dr. Shirin Vossoughi, Assistant Professor at Northwestern University's Learning Sciences, and partners from the Northwestern Teatro Collective, will include an introduction to the history and practi e of an artistic form named Teatro. This session will engage the audience in exploring oppression and injustice through theatrical performance and discussion. Audience members will develop individual, everyday strategies for transforming conflicts and dreaming of societal connections and solutions.
  • Our afternoon keynote, presented by Dr. Nicole A. Cooke, Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's School of Information Sciences, will focus on the importance for educators to recognize their role in creating and sustaining a welcoming learning environment, and the value of cultural competency in delivering programs and services to meet the needs of adolescents, an increasingly diverse group.
  • Two sets of afternoon breakout sessions will include a deeper dive into teatro (explored in the morning keynote); art-making and exploration of the Arthur Millers' classic, The Crucible, with Steppenwolf Education; urban planning and civic engagement activities for No Small Plans with the Chicago Architecture Foundation; and a participant-led unconference.
