Intended audiences: This presentation is intended for child protection workers, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, physicians, nurses, mental health professionals (including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers of all levels, and licensed counselors), and all other disciplines not listed.

Presentation Description:

The presentation will familiarize participants with the latest developments from across the United States regarding legal and psychological aspects of child abuse litigation.

The presentation will touch on criminal litigation and child abuse accusations in family court, where one of the most pressing national issues is use of expert testimony and accusations alleging parental alienation.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe case law developments relevant to legal and CPS practice;
  2. Summarize developments in the psychological literature relevant to interviewing children;
  3. Recall treatise rule to cross-examine expert witnesses;
  4. Describe civil litigation—parental alienation in custody cases;
  5. Recap Confrontation Clause update.

John Myers is an authority on legal aspects of child abuse and domestic violence. John has written fifteen books and more than 100 articles and chapters. For 35 years, John was a law professor at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA. Since retiring from McGeorge in 2019, John has taught full time as a visiting professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. John teaches evidence, criminal law, criminal procedure, family law, and community property. John’s writing has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, the New Jersey Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, and nearly 200 other courts. John has given more than 400 presentations across America and abroad.

In addition to teaching and writing, John practices law. He represents abused and neglected children in juvenile court, victims of domestic violence in family court, and children in high conflict custody and international parental child abduction cases.
