Event description

Description

Join us for performances and a silent auction to benefit Experiments in Opera’s 2017 season, with special guests humorist Patricia Marx and soprano Elyse Kakacek.

EiO's 2017 Benefit will feature a reading by acclaimed author and humorist Patricia Marx and a performance by rising-star soprano Elyse Kakacek. Elyse is one of the featured soloists in EiO's 2017-18 season. Patricia will read from selections of her essays and short stories including ‘Pledge Drive,’ a featured story in EiO’s Flash Operas, coming in May 2017.

Artists with auctioned works include: Orla Dunstan, Amy Finkel, Antonio Frasconi, David Fratkin, Mollie Goldstrom, Lauren Kolesinskas, Lisa Komara, Zach Layton, Jane Logemann, Dana McClure, Amy Mills, Shana Moulton, Nick Noyes, Mitzi Pratt, Reuben Radding, Bosiljka Raditsa, Elizabeth Yamin, Joshua White and more.

All proceeds from the benefit and silent auction support Experiments in Opera’s production of Flash Operas, premiering at Symphony Space on May 5 and 6, 2017. Flash Operas feature six new commissions based on Flash Fiction short stories by some of today’s most inventive writers.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Elyse Kakacek has been acclaimed by critics as “a young singer with vocal heft” with a “sparkling soprano voice” and “pleasing ability to navigate the stage”. An enthusiast for both the classic repertory and newer work, some of Elyse’s favorite performed stage roles include Norina, Musetta, Flora (The Turn of the Screw), Micaela, Susanna, Pamina, Despina, Gretel, and Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia). She is also a proud member of the ensemble for both Chicago Fringe Opera and The Floating Opera Project.

Patricia Marx is a writer for The New Yorker, former writer for Saturday Night Live, and the first woman elected to the Harvard Lampoon. Her books include the novel Him Her Him Again The End of Him, the children's book Now Everybody Really Hates Me, and the humor book How To Regain Your Virginity. After writing this book, Patty Marx got so smart she changed her name to Patricia Marx.
