Experimental Video: 2-Week Premiere Editing Workshop

About this Event

In light of regulations concerning COVID-19 and to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we are now offering our class online. Let's utilize this this downtime to learn a new skill and keep your mind active. Maybe even add new training to your resume. Stay Healthy, Stay Safe.

DAS' two-week (four day) Experimental Video Premiere Editing Workshop explores the meaning and implications of the terms ‘Video Art’, ‘Experimental Video’, ‘Personal Documentaries’. In this course, students will explore a variety of technical, aesthetic, social and conceptual aspects of video, and produce their own video artworks that will be virtually screened at the Experimental Shorts Film Festival at DAS in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn on April 3rd, 2020.

This course will examine experimental video from three thematic modules over the course of the semester:

the Diary/Confessional;

Found/Appropriated Footage,

Family/Autobiography.

Each module will include screenings of works by artists and filmmakers of different generations. In addition to gaining an understanding of the historical significance of experimental video, students will also be immersed in the technical craft and conceptual art of post-production including editing, visual effects and sound design. Through a combination of lecture, demonstration, and in-class exercises, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of non-linear editing using Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

During this workshop students complete four projects in which they demonstrate their understanding of the theory and technical skills presented in class.

By the end of this workshop students will be able to:

- Understand and navigate the Adobe Premiere interface

- Gain awareness of theoretical and technical principles of video editing.

- Produce and edit 4 (four) experimental video projects from start to finish.

- Comprehend timing, rhythm, and transitions, as it pertains to editing.

- Gain an understanding of the history of experimental video.

- Lastly, students will have the option to become Adobe Certified Associates in Premiere through Pearson Vue. Additional fees may apply.

This class is taught by Nathaniel Garcia, a digital media artist, curator, and education scholar. He has worked as a video editor and motion graphic designer on short films, commercials and art videos that have been exhibited around the world. In 2020, he founded DAS NYC, an exhibition & workshop space designed to help digital artists move closer to realizing their creative goals through software instruction and digital art exhibition. Nathaniel is interested in non-hierarchical, project-based approaches to learning. This means students learn through the collaborative execution of projects that stress innovative approaches to problem-solving.

He holds an Bachelor of Arts from Loyola Marymount University and a Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. He is currently working on his doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University.

NYC's Digital Art Space (DAS) was built with the idea that community fulfills artistic goals. Located in East Williamsburg, our exhibition & workshop space is designed to help digital artists move closer to realizing their creative goals through software instruction and digital art exhibition.

Examples of Nathaniel's work can be seen here.

Participants will be given footage to work with that can be sent via WeTransfer, but you may also use your own footage.
