Event description

Description

Sound School are excited to host a very special presentation from Anne Lanzilotti and Gahlord Dewald at the Substation. A presentation on the inner workings of their practice of combined classical string instruments and experimental electronics and the philosophy of Deep Listening will be followed by a live performance on viola, contrabass, and modular synthesiser. Anne and Gahlord are joined by Melbourne experimental dance music artist Fia Fiell, who brings her classical training as a pianist to modern synthesis.

As a violist and electronic artist Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti has performed with ensembles such as A Far Cry, Alarm Will Sound, and Ensemble Signal, and collaborated with artists including Björk, DeVotchka, and She & Him. In her home of Hawai’i she co-founded Kalikolehua - El Sistema Hawai'i, a free orchestra program for disadvantaged young people, and is currently the Assistant Professor of Viola and Director of the Contemporary Music Ensemble at University of Northern Colorado School of Music. Gahlord Dewald is an experimental double bass and modular synthesiser artist specializing in acoustic, electric, and synthetic low frequencies. Deeply embedded in the “unusual music” scene of Burlington, Vermont, he is music director for the Viva La Voce Puppet Opera, and bassist in groups including Charles, Dead or Alive?, the le duo, and Made by Robots. Together Anne and Gahlord form The Yes &, an experimental viola and modular synth duo.

Supporting them is Melbourne artist Fia Fiell, aka Carolyn Schofield. Carolyn combines her profound practical and theoretical chops as a pianist and composer with a most modern and perceptive ear for stretching out the orbit of millennial electronic music constructs. Her acclaimed live performances, which have included sets at Freedom Time, Melbourne Fashion Week and Melbourne Music Week, involve multiple synthesizers played and processed in real time to create hauntingly ethereal, unsettling and other-worldly soundscapes.

This event will take place on stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We pay our respects to elders past and present, and acknowledge that genocide is ongoing and sovereignty has never been ceded.

Entry to all Sound School events is free of charge, but places are limited so please reserve your spot. Substation is a wheelchair accessible venue. If you have any queries about accessibility please hit us up – melbournesoundschool@gmail.com.
