Experiencing Jesus in the Everyday: 12 Weeks of the Ignatian Exercises
Wed, Dec 6, 2017, 12:00 PM – Wed, Feb 21, 2018, 12:00 PM CST
God is present to us at all times in all places (Ps. 139). We, however, are not always present to him. St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuits, designed his Spiritual Exercises, in part, to help us become more aware of God's presence in our everyday lives. These exercises, by allowing us to imaginatively enter into the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus, in the context of our day-to-day routine, enable us to experience the powerful and intimate presence of Jesus in life-changing ways. We go from simply knowing about Jesus to truly knowing Jesus and being known by Jesus.
The Spiritual Exercises are often practiced in a 30 day silent retreat or over the course of 9 months. This unique 12 week experience, however, is designed by the Jesuits and uses a tool specifically produced by them so that people who may not have 9 months to give can nonetheless experience the Spiritual Exercises.
Participants will be required to engage in DAILY readings and reflections and to gather WEEKLY (Wednesdays at Noon) on either Google Hangout or at the building of the Highland Church of Christ (Memphis, TN) to share their experiences in the Exercises over the past week. The Exercises are challenging. Don't participate unless you feel confident you can engage in the daily readings and reflections (devoting approximately 30 minutes a day to them) and can make the weekly gatherings for 12 weeks (either via online or in person face to face). But if you do participate, you will experience a richness and a depth you've perhaps never before experienced.
Participants will be required to purchase, on their own, a copy of Finding Christ in the World: A Twelve Week Ignatian Retreat in Everyday Life. It can be purchased here.
We purposely begin just after Advent, a season when many around the world are thinking of Christ and his birth.
