Event description

Never before displayed for the public! Join us behind the scenes to see one of the museum's most significant recent acquisitions - the control room equipment from NR-1. Rear Admiral Douglas Perry, a former Assistant Officer-in-Charge of NR-1, will regale us with stories of life on board.

NR-1, the world’s first and only nuclear-powered research submarine, was conceived and constructed after the loss of USS Thresher (SSN 593) to expand the Navy’s ability to investigate the oceans. It performed military and scientific missions for almost 40 years (1969–2008), conducting searches, recoveries, oceanographic research, geological surveys, and installation and maintenance of underwater equipment.

This special tour is part of Deep Sea Day: Meet the Experts, November 2, 10am - 3pm. In addition to this free ticketed tour, experts in submarines, torpedoes, undersea vehicles, and Navy programs, will be sharing their knowledge throughout the day. A special family robotics and virtual reality education program from 10am - 2pm will develop coding and coordination skills.
