Event description
Did you know that Great Blue Herons make their nests way up in treetops, just like sparrows?! Join this expedition to see them in person!

About this Event

The Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams is hosting a one-of-a-kind birding experience: visiting a nearby heron rookery, where as many as 100 active nests can be seen.

Expedition: Heron Rookery will take place on Tuesday, April 20, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. When RSVPing, please note your shoe size so you can be fitted with a pair of waders if you do not already own a pair. Space is limited and only a few spots are left! To register and get directions, click here.

This Expedition is a part of one of Dr. Nate Bosch’s college labs. Participants will get a firsthand look at a heron rookery and learn from Dr. Bosch’s ecology expertise while wading through the marshy overflow near the Tippecanoe River. Herons prefer to build their nests in trees near water, making this location is an ideal spot for them to gather.

Caution: Due to the strenuous nature of this Expedition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 12. At times, participants can expect to be up to their waists in water. Wear clothing that can get wet.

Special thanks to Zimmer Biomet for underwriting this and other Lilly Center Expeditions.
