Event description

Description

On 13th Sept we are delighted to welcome Assoc. Prof Sonja Tiernan (Liverpool Hope University) to open the exhibition she has curated about Hilda Tweedy and the Irish Housewives Association, entitled 'Hilda Tweedy: A Link in the Chain'. This exhibition will be on show at the Centre from September 13th through to November and we are delighted that we can bring a fascinating era of Irish social and women's history to public view in Manchester.

Founded in 1942 by Tweedy, the Irish Housewives Association was heavily invested in a variety of public debates about the socio-economic, ethical and moral shape of the new Republic, its allegiances and alliances.

To open the exhibition, Sonja will deliver a public talk, entitled, 'Dangerous trends in Ireland': The Irish Housewives Association (1942-1992), exploring the fascinating contexts in which the Irish Housewives Association operated and the key debates it became embroiled in.

Event cover picture shows delegates from the Irish Housewives Association conference with President Eamon de Valera outside Aras an Uachtarain in August 1961.

Sonja Tiernan is Assoc Prof of History and Head of the Department of History & Politics at Liverpool Hope University. She has published widely on the work of Eva Gore-Booth and on twentieth-century Irish history and politics. An overview of her publications can be found here: https://www.hope.ac.uk/staff/tiernas.html

For an overview of Hilda Tweedy, the IHA and the exhibition which has traveled through public libraries in Dublin, an article by Sonja can be found here: http://www.historyireland.com/20th-century-contemporary-history/hilda-tweedy-the-original-desperate-housewife/
