Description

EXHIBITION
“Geniale Dilletanten” was the deliberately misspelled title of a concert that took place on September 4, 1981 in the Berlin venue Tempodrom. The title has come to stand for a brief era of artistic renewal in West and East Germany in the mid-1980s, a period when people in all the arts explored new paths and innovative forms of expression. Curated by Mathilde Weh (Visual Arts, Goethe-Institut, Munich), this exhibition presents the most comprehensive survey to date of this extraordinarily innovative subculture, highlighting the work of several bands, various artists, filmmakers and designers from West and East Germany.

The Opening Reception takes place on January 5, 6:00 - 9:00pm.

On January 13, 8:00pm, will be the screening of "Punk Berlin 1982". The film, directed by Oskar Roehler 2014/2015, will be presented in the context of the exhibition and followed by a DJ reception.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Pro Arts has curated several evenings of performances by Bay Area musicians whose work is influenced by and shares aesthetics with the German bands on view – Including Moira Scar, Jewelled Snakes, Pod Blotz, Bonus Beast, Centre, Flower Pattern, Pander, Thoabath, Yama Uba, and Sharon Tate Fetus Explosion.
