Event description

Description

In "Matinee Idols," a new exhibit at the Miller House Museum, you can explore the Golden Age of Hollywood as seen by the people of Washington County.

At its peak, the city of Hagerstown was home to countless movie theaters, among them the Colonial, Henry's, and the Maryland Theatre, all located in the downtown area. Besides providing local people with a source of entertainment, movies played an important social role during the years of the Great Depression and World War II.

And in some cases, Hollywood came to Hagerstown! Many famous actors and actresses visited the area for a variety or reasons, sometimes to promote new movies, or during wars, to promote fundraising through the sale of war bonds. Our famous film star visitors included Debbie Reynolds, Aldo Ray, and Paulette Goddard.

You can experience Hagerstown's "Golden Age" of cinema and discover for yourself what it was like to go to the movies during the early 20th century when you visit "Matinee Idols," now on display at the Miller House Museum.

And be sure to join us for the wonderful lecture series we will be hosting throughout the run of the exhibit. Speakers will include children of movie theatre owners, film preservation specialists, and we'll even be hosting session on preserving your treasured home movies!
