Exhibit: In The Beginning... pushing the boundaries of textiles
Event Information
About this Event
As one of the first skills acquired by humankind, textile arts in their many forms are known for their intricacies, practicality and necessity. In this exhibit, three women artists push the boundaries of what defines textile art.
Incorporating woven fiber optics, stitched three-dimensional photography and non traditional weaving techniques, “In the Beginning…” presents a new focus on techniques whose familiarity has desensitized our appreciation for this long-standing handcraft.
DCDT presents a kinetic, textile exhibit curated by S.Ayers Art and produced by Embrace Creatives.
Featuring work from;
Irene Levon Walker: Using the traditional methods of weaving and felting, combined with modern materials, I produce cloth to create sculptural garments and environments. These garments appear to be a distant reminder of a world that is not our own, but still feels familiar, like the hazy recollections of our dreams or the ever shifting shadows of memory.
Studio Herron: Studio Herron, is a textile and furniture design studio with a vision to create products that combine an artistic process and traditional craft methodologies with the utilitarian and the aesthetic.
L. Mikelle Standbridge: Mikelle grew up in California, and from San Francisco State University, received her B.F.A, with an emphasis in photography but from an art department that fostered experimental and interdisciplinary approaches. She completed her M.F.A at the Univ. of Chicago in 1996. Moving to Milan in 2000, she is now represented by the Milan gallery Gli Eroici Furori – Contemporary Art and exhibits frequently nationally and internationally.
This exhibit is free and open to the public.
Lite fare and beverages will be served. Parking is available off of Willis, metered on Cass or use the parking garage behind Great Lakes Coffee on Alexandrine.
