More About the Speaker:

Ashley K. Fernandes, MD, PhD, is the Associate Director of the Center for Bioethics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, as well as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He received an MA in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1999; an MD from The Ohio State University in 2003; and a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University in 2008. Dr. Fernandes is board certified in General Pediatrics. Focusing on bioethics and professionalism educational scholarship, he has been appointed the Director of Competency for Professionalism at the College of Medicine in 2019. He currently directs ethics education for pediatric residents at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and was a member of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital ethics committee from 2016-2018. He was the Chair of the ethics committee at Dayton Children’s Hospital for 6 years before coming to Columbus. His scholarly interests include Medicine and the Holocaust studies, pediatric ethics, and philosophical anthropology as it relates to medical practice and social justice. He has also practiced both hospital and ambulatory pediatrics.

Dr. Fernandes is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Pediatrics, an elected member of the AAP’s Executive Committee on Bioethics, a member of the AOA Medical Honor Society, and a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, receiving the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award in 2010. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, most recently The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Award in Mentorship in 2019, the “Courage to Teach” and “Inspire” Awards, and the University of Toledo’s Outstanding Alumni for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in 2019. Dr. Fernandes is a Presidential Board of Trustee of Ohio Right to Life, and has been a member of the Catholic Medical Association since medical school, which also awarded him the national Mentor of the Year Award in 2015. He serves on their national speaker’s bureau. He lives with his wife Shruti (a family physician) and two boys in Dublin, Ohio.
