Description

Executive Functions-Based Treatment for ADHD: It's All About Time

Ari Tuckman, PsyD, MBA

3 CE Credits

Description: Most people with ADHD struggle with time management and doing the right things at the right times, and standard therapy and strategies are not sufficient to overcome these neurologically driven deficits. This presentation will go beyond all the basic strategies and take a deeper look at the science of time awareness and time management so that attendees can really understand why time is such a struggle for those with ADHD. This fundamental understanding will guide practical intervention strategies that are more likely to be effective. We will discuss the concepts of time horizon and temporal discounting to provide a foundation to understand why the strategies presented here work better. These strategies will help those with ADHD to see time more effectively by externalizing it and then feel time more effectively by building motivation to act towards the future. We will also discuss how neurology drives psychology and results in rationalizations that are common among those with ADHD which then further impact their ability to activate themselves in a timely manner, and therefore how to address them in therapy. This presentation will be all about applying the theory into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

1) Attendees will be able to apply an understanding of executive functions to the treatment of ADHD.

2) Attendees will be able to explain why time is so central to the struggles of ADHD.

3) Attendees will be able to describe how time horizon and temporal discounting explain some of the time management problems associated with ADHD.

4) Attendees will be able to address the rationalizations associated with these neurologically driven time management deficits.
