Topic: EWRI 2020 Student Scholarships Winners' Technical Presentation Speaker: Andrew Ly and Bryan Melara

About this Event

Topic: Water-related diseases in the third world and developing countries

Speaker: Andrew Ly, University of California, Irvine

Andrew is a third-year civil engineering student at University of California, Irvine with an interest in wastewater treatment and water resources. Ever since the first year of college, Andrew has been heavily involved in UCI ASCE Student Chapter and have been actively working towards advancing his professional career. Currently, he is part of the Internal Activities Committee for ASCE as well as the Co-Project Manager for the PSWC Environmental Competition. In addition, he is interning at Irvine Ranch Water District, which has been one of his biggest steps in pursuing his civil engineering interests. In his spare time, I enjoy live-streaming video games, drawing, and beatboxing.

Topic: Solutions to Southern California’s aging stormwater infrastructure

Speaker: Byran Melara, California State University, Long Beach

Byran is currently an undergraduate student in his last semester of civil engineering at California State University, Long Beach. He has been involved with ASCE ever since he transferred to CSULB in the Fall of 2018. He found a passion for environmental and water resources engineering when he was 17 since he had the opportunity to visit water-stressed countries like Honduras and his native country of El Salvador. He joined and was part of the CSULB ASCE Environmental Team that competed in PSWC 2019. In the Fall of 2019, he decided to take on more responsibilities, so he became an officer for the CSULB ASCE Chapter, and he also became the PM for their CSULB Environmental Team during PSWC 2020. At the same time, he has been involved with the ASCE OC Branch, as he is an alumnus of the ASCE OC 2019 Pathways Academy program which afforded him the opportunity to tour the offices of both public and private firms in the OC. Through this opportunity he landed his current internship at AECOM, where he have been working as a water/wastewater engineering intern for the past 10 months.
