Description

Evidence-Based Intervention and Support with Adolescents and Adults with ASD: Challenges, Risks, and Quality of Life

Peter Gerhardt, Ed.D.

3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU

Abstract

Evidence-based intervention with adolescents and adults with ASD is complex and, at the same time, limited in scope by a relatively small – albeit growing -- research base. And while much of the behavior analytic research with young children can, at least in part, be generalized to older learners, this still represents a narrow band of necessary adult competencies. This had lead Roux, et al, (2015) to note that young adults with autism have a difficult time following high school for almost any outcome you choose - working, continuing school, living independently, socializing and participating in the community, and staying healthy and safe.” (p. 8). This presentation will provide an overview of the current literature on supporting adolescents and adults, of what constitutes evidence-based practice, and the potential of applied behavior analysis to improve individual quality of life in adulthood for individuals on the autism spectrum.
