Examination & Treatment of Cervical Spine, Temporomandibular, & Headache Disorders: An Evidence Based Approach

This 1-day (10.5 CEH) course provides an evidence-based approach to the examination and treatment of cervical, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and headache disorders. Participants will acquire an understanding of cervical impairment-based classifications, pathoanatomical differential diagnosis, and evidence-based interventions. Evidence-based examination tests will be presented with supplemental video, live demonstration, and optional lab participation (TMJ and headache). The merits & limitations of common interventions will be presented from both a physiological and evidence-based perspective with both video and live demonstration.

At the conclusion of this course the attendee will:

1. Recognize the clinical presentation of common cervical, headache, temporomandibular disorders (TMD)

2. Understand neck pain impairment-based classification and coupled cervical interventions

3. Recognize signs and symptoms suggesting non-mechanical pathology as related to the patient presenting for a cervical and TMJ examination

4. Recognize risk factors in both the general and athletic population of cervical disorders

5. Recognize correct performance of evidence-based tests & measures for the cervical spine and TMJ

6. Understand the relevance of reliability and validity when selecting clinical tests of the cervical and TMJ

7. Recognize correct performance of cervical and TMJ examination techniques

8. Recognize evidence-based cervical and TMJ interventions including manual therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, motor control, therapeutic exercises and physical agents

9. Recognize the merits and limitations as well as the available evidence surrounding common interventions

Optional Lab Participation Objectives:
1. Perform measurement techniques for temporomandibular joint range of motion
2. Perform palpation techniques for the temporomandibular joint and cranio-fascial regions

An Introduction to Radiographic Anatomy and Pathology

Course description: This 1-day (7.0 CEH) course provides a clinical introduction to radiographic anatomy & pathology. Participants will acquire an understanding of parameters used to obtain and interpret radiographs. A discussion of both standard and specialty radiographic views of the spine and extremities will be covered. Interpretation of normal anatomy, structural alignment and pathology will be covered for the more common musculoskeletal conditions including fractures, dislocations, as well as degenerative and soft tissue disorders. The merits of incorporating radiographic findings into clinical practice will be discussed as will evidence-based guidelines currently in use for ordering radiographs. Case studies will be used in conjunction with lecture to enhance learning. This class is designed to be primary clinical in content and will provide immediately applicable information.

2. Standard & specialty views for the spine & extremity

3. Abnormal findings on a radiograph of the spine & extremities

Instructor Biographies

Morey J. Kolber, PT, PhD, OCS, Cert MDT, CSCS*D, is a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he teaches courses in orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. He has been a practicing physical therapist in the clinical setting for the past 24 years. Dr. Kolber has well-over 200 peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations and has been a recipient of numerous research grants including the National Strength and Conditioning Association Young Investigator Grant, APTA Orthopaedic Section Grant, and the Nova Southeastern Universities Presidents Grant. Currently he serves as the Senior Associate Editor in Chief for Strength and Conditioning Journal and as an Associate Editor for Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. He holds a board certification in Orthopaedics through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and is currently on the Committee of Content Experts for the Orthopaedic Board Certification Examination. Dr. Kolber has been the recipient of numerous awards including the academic faculty of the year award from the Florida Physical Therapy Association, the Distinguished Professor award for the College of Healthcare Sciences at Nova Southeastern university, and the national Strength and Conditioning Associations Sports medicine Professional of the year. Dr. Kolber has a certification in mechanical diagnosis and therapy of the spine through the McKenzie Institute, USA and is a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He serves as a regular reviewer for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy for imaging related topics and has served on the editorial board for a recently published radiology textbook. Dr. Kolber has been teaching the topic of radiology for over 15 years at the post-graduate level.

Ovidio Olivencia, PT, DPT, OCS is an Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Dr. Olivencia received his bachelor degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of California Davis, and a Master Degree in Physical Therapy at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from A.T. Still University in 2012. Dr. Olivencia started his physical therapy career as a staff therapist in an outpatient clinic treating spinal and temporomandibular disorders. He also worked as an Adjunct Professor for eight years at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). In August of 2012, he was appointed NSU as a full time faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Olivencia is a course co-leader for all the musculoskeletal (orthopedic) classes at the NSU Entry Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. In addition, He is also the course leader for the courses of Exercise Physiology and Clinical Anatomy. Dr. Olivencia is currently involved at NSU as a practicing clinician in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic and holds a board certification in Orthopaedics through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. As a clinician, he trains and instructs students from the NSU Physical Therapy Program while also treating patients from the community. In 2019, Dr. Olivencia was the recipient of the Nova Southeastern University, College of Healthcare Sciences Faculty of the Year Award. Lastly, Dr. Olivencia research interest lies in the field of Orthopedics and Exercise Physiology. His clinical interest resides in the areas of cervical spine, headaches, and temporomandibular disorders. Dr. Olivencia also publishes peer-review manuscripts and presents on various topics related to exercise physiology and orthopedics.

There are no group registration discounts. Instead we offer an early registration discount provided registration is received by 8/1/19.

What are my parking options at the event?

Parking is free and provided directly in the parking garage adjacent to the Terry Building, College of Healthcare Sciences

What's the refund/cancellation policy?

If a registrant cancels he/she may receive a refund minus a 25% administrative fee. Cancellation requests must be made in writing to moreykolber@gmail.com and through the eventbrite platform, and MUST submitted at least 30 days prior to the course date. Cancellations not received within 30 days prior to course date will not be refunded; however, may be rescheduled if another course date is available. Instructors reserve the right to cancel the course due to circumstances beyond control & assumes no responsibility for expenses incurred by registrants. Cancellation in such an event will prompt a full tuition refund. In the event of a hurricane, courses will be rescheduled to take place before the end of the renewal period. Course cancellations as a result of a hurricane rescheduling will not be subject to the 30 day cancellation policy. *Course cancellations as a result of a change in venue will not be subject to the 25% administrative fee provided registrant cancels through the eventbrite platform at a date not later than 7-days after notification of venue change.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

This is not required but highly recommended.

Do I need to bring any form of identification or license information?

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants should bring their license number as this will need to be entered on sign-in sheets so that your course credits can be entered into CE broker

What if I am only able to attend half the course or have to leave early?

The course registration fee will not be pro-rated for those who miss class time. Attendees will only be given credit for the actual hours attended. If you have to leave early or miss part of the earlier sessions the credit hours will be adjusted when entered on CE broker.

Will I be required to participate in the lab activities?

No, lab participation is optional
