Free Wellness Event

April 29th, 2017 8:30 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.

An invitation for adult men and women in the community who have an interest in healthy lifestyle management.

9:05 - 10:15 a.m. Wellness for All - Using the S.M.A.R.T. Approach to Live Healthier

What exactly is a ‘healthy lifestyle’ and how do I know if I’m living one? If I do want to make lifestyles changes, how do I start? In this presentation, Laura will cover the basics of healthy living and offer an activity that allows you to check in with yourself about your current lifestyle. Then you’ll learn about how people change and finish by writing your own S.M.A.R.T. goal to get you started. If you are looking for practical steps to start making changes, don’t miss this presentation!

Workshop 1: Practical Activity for Wellness

Here you will learn about the power of movement and exercise and how to make it feel good, safe and hopefully fun. Regular movement reduces fatigue and increases overall physical/emotional wellbeing and independence. It has been shown to help improve strength, endurance, balance, sleep, thinking and learning, and reduce pain and psychological distress such as fear, anxiety and sadness. It is important to learn how to tailor physical activity to match ability and preferences. Learn how small changes can make a big difference.

Workshop 2: Nutrition: “Spicy” Tips for Optimal Wellness

How nutrition savvy are you? Knowledge is power when it comes to making lifestyle choices in your life. Come and test your knowledge when it comes to choosing your lifestyle habits. Take away fun and practical tips for incorporating the latest research into your life, and that of your loved ones. Resources and recipes will be provided.

Workshop 3: Everyday Mindfulness

How can the science of Mindfulness help you to move forward with personal goals for wellbeing? In this session you will gently explore “being present” to four cornerstones of health: eating, moving, sleeping and meaning. Learn easy but empowering mind-body-spirit practices to tame your stress response.

12:15 - 12:45 p.m. Wellness Break: Lunch and Connecting Conversations (Lunch will include gluten and dairy free options)

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Vitamins, Supplements, and Medications What you Need to Know

The goal of this session is to give you tools to stay safe with your medicines. We will navigate the regulation and preparation differences between vitamins, supplements and medications. How are they similar how are they different? We will also discuss some potential safety concerns when we combine vitamins, supplements, and medications together.
