Event description
Everyday Peace Indicators: Efforts at Including Local Voices in Measurement and Evaluation after War with Professor Pamina Firchow

About this event

How do locals understand and measure peace in villages in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Colombia or other contexts affected by war or violence? How can this knowledge assist in the design of peacebuilding initiatives, and also inform our understanding of their success? The increasing academic focus on bottom-up approaches to peace emphasizes local, contextual understandings of peace and conflict dynamics, but we struggle to elicit this contextual knowledge, and struggle further to measure it. This presentation outlines a community-centered, participatory research approach that produces participatory statistics – The Everyday Peace Indicators (EPI).

Pamina Firchow is Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution and Coexistence at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy. Her main research interests surround the study of the international accompaniment of communities affected by mass violence, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. She has published widely on participatory approaches to design, measurement and evaluation of transitional justice, reconciliation and peacebuilding interventions, including her most recent award winning book, Reclaiming Everyday Peace: Local Voices in Measurement and Evaluation after War (Cambridge University Press, 2018). Firchow earned her PhD from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. She has been working in the peacebuilding sector as a scholar-practitioner for non-governmental organizations and universities since 1999. You can read more about her work and interests at paminafirchow.org
