About The Class:

Everyday Music: The Basics is a class open to all music lovers looking to expand their knowledge and ability within the field. Are you a performer who has never had the opportunity to learn the basics and fundamentals of music theory? Are you a passionate fan looking to learn more about how your favorite artists create their work so you can play along? Are you interested in the field of music but don’t know where to start learning to catch up in a competitive, fast-moving field? Maybe you’ve just always thought the “language” of music was too complicated to take the time to learn. This program, in just 8 classes, will provide anyone with an interest in music the opportunity to learn everything from the fundamentals of reading music to the preliminary levels of music analysis by giving you the tools and time to examine the music you love. These invaluable skills will stick with you forever and provide a whole new perspective to appreciate all the music around you, don’t miss out!

Registration is requested. This class will take place in the third floor Music Studio.

Class Structure:

  • Week 1 (Jan. 9): The Musical Dictionary - Goals: Learning terminology, learning the layout of sheet music, understanding the pieces of the musical staff
  • Week 2 (Jan. 16): Notified - Goals: Learning the note names and where each note is on the staff, transferring to bass clef, identifying key signatures
  • Week 3 (Jan. 23): In The Groove - Goals: Learn the different note heads and stems and their rhythmic values, identifying time signature, dissection and understanding of BPM
  • Week 4 (Jan 30): All Together - Goals: Synthesize understanding of staff, pitch, and rhythm to demonstrate translation of sheet music into sound
  • Week 5 (Feb. 6): Time To Harmonize - Goals: Use knowledge of key signatures to identify harmonic and en-harmonic notes, begin to look at chord progressions, understand the fundamental triad chords and what extensions are
  • Week 6 (Feb. 13): Earworms - Goals: Apply harmonic and en-harmonic understanding to melodic dissonance, learn how songwriters and composer manipulate a melody within harmony to create memorable tunes
  • Week 7 (Feb. 20): Making Progress - Goals: Begin to look at time signature and key signature changes, question how and why progressive musical creators develop these techniques
  • Week 8 (Feb. 27): To The Test - Goals: Synthesize all knowledge learned to create a basic music analysis of a tune as a framework for moving forward and studying more music

About The Instructor:

Nathan Ramey holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Composition from Christopher Newport University, where he was also a member of the music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda and president of the university’s Society of Composer’s Inc. chapter. Mr. Ramey has worked across the state of Virginia as a performing jazz drummer, composer, producer, songwriter, and stage manager. He currently works as a stage manager and cultural arts specialist at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center as well as performing across the Hampton Roads area and running his own independent music collective with artists across the country.
