 ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This is perhaps the most adventure that can possibly be packed into an all-day photography workshop: Swamp walk Boardwalk | Miccosukee Tribe Island | Sunset airboat ride and so much more!

Partnering with Clyde Butcher's Big Cypress Gallery and a Miccosukee Indian owned airboat company, we have put together a full day of adventure and photographic education that takes you right to the most amazing photo hot-spots in the Everglades. Most people don't dare venture to theses secluded locations on their own. All of this with naturalist guides and an experienced nature photography instructor leading the way.

Experience Big Cypress National Preserve Everglades just as Clyde Butcher sees it right from his backyard! Come spend the day with your award-winning photographer and instructor, Robert Sullivan, accompanied by photojournalist, Al Diaz and a naturalist guide on a swamp walk in the Everglades. Have lunch in a swamp cottage and watch an information-packed visual PowerPoint presentation on nature photography, then we move onto a boardwalk photo-walk. We will wrap up the day with a spectacular two-hour airboat ride to a Miccosukee Indian-owned island at sunset deep in the Everglades River of Grass.

Get your feet wet as you marvel at the pristine splendor of natural Florida as you traverse through a rarely seen world, filled with vibrant colors and mysterious sounds in this spacious, richly diverse wilderness of subtropical flora and fauna found nowhere else. Under the guidance of our workshop instructors, photograph endangered orchids, rare ferns, threatened bromeliad, native birds and a host of native creatures.

Beneath the ancient cypress trees, stop and listen to the deep stillness of an unspoiled world that seems far from everyday life. Chase the light with Sullivan and Diaz in this light-filled realm of wonder and awe as you are completely surrounded by nature in her purest and most sacred state.

Sullivan will also demonstrate how he safely carries his cameras and equipment on a standup paddleboard deep into the Everglades.

Come join us and soak in a day of adventure and all the photographic learning opportunities that participants will be exposed to.

ABOUT ROBERT SULLIVAN

Robert Sullivan is an award-winning photographer specializing in nature, landscape, dance portraiture, and remote-triggered off-camera flash photography. He often travels up to 12 weeks per year to places such as New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands. His adventurous style of travel photography usually involves him staying in remote hostels, or camping in his hammock-tent. Sullivan looks for “the path less traveled” to discover unique scenes that, sometimes, even the locals don’t know about.

Sullivan lives on a sailboat in Miami, Florida he uses as a platform to transport and launch his kayaks and stand up paddleboards. Shooting from these vessels allows him to photograph places that are not easily accessible by any other means.

ITINERARY

7 am – 8:30 am  Optional and complementary add-on Sunrise photo shoot:
Meet Sullivan and Diaz at Kirby Storter Roadside Park (5-minute drive west from workshop location) for a sunrise photography session.

Located at 48900 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee, FL 34141.
9 am – 10 am Beginning of workshop: The workshop will begin with introductions, followed by a demonstration of how workshop instructor Robert Sullivan safely carries himself and his photography equipment on his standup paddleboard for his photographic journeys deep into the Everglades.

Located at 52388 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee, FL 34141.
10 am – 1 pm Swamp walk in the Everglades: Get your feet wet as you marvel at the pristine splendor of natural Florida as one of Clyde Butcher’s naturalists guides you through a rarely seen world, filled with vibrant colors and mysterious sounds.  Learn how to photograph the watery landscape, wildlife, and plant life under the guidance of your photography instructor who will be right there with you to offer assistance and answer questions. After the swamp walk, you will have a chance to change into dry clothes and shoes.

1 pm – 3:30 pm Lunch and Lecture in Clyde Butcher's Swamp Cottage: A 30-minute lunch to include vegan options will be provided. Sullivan will present a visual and informative PowerPoint presentation on the second floor of the swamp cottage with the panoramic vistas through the large windows as our backdrop. The lecture will cover the photographic techniques that Sullivan uses to photograph the Everglades landscape, how he photographs wildlife (often, up close), as well as a Q&A session. We will break for a tour of Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery to view his work and discuss the photographic techniques that he employed to create his amazing images of the Everglades.

3:30 pm – 6 pm Photo-walk on the nearby boardwalk: Instructor, Sullivan, will lead the group on a photo-walk on a nearby boardwalk or two that are within a 10-minute drive of the Big Cypress Gallery. Once again, you will have the opportunity to photograph the landscape, wildlife, and plants of the swamp…this time from an elevated and dry position.  Water levels are low this time of year which concentrates the wildlife in the few remaining waterholes. It's the breeding season, the birds may be exhibiting their mating plumage.

6 pm – 6:30 pm Drive to airboat departure point: Following the photo-walk on the boardwalk(s), we will drive less than 20 minutes to the airboat dock and prepare for our airboat tour of the Everglades.

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Sunset airboat photography tour of the Everglades:
To top off our activity-filled workshop, we will board our airboat(s) for a tour of the swamp to coincide with the “golden hour”, sunset, and the “blue hour”.  With sunset at 7:30 pm, we will have some time beforehand to explore as our Miccosukee Indian airboat driver guides us through the River of Grass for opportunities to photograph the landscape and wildlife.  Arriving at a Miccosukee Tribe-owned island, we will be on firm ground deep in the Everglades to set up our tripods for panoramic photos across the landscape of the constantly changing light from 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunset.
8:30 pm – 9 pm Final thoughts and wrap-up: We arrive back at the airboat dock at or shortly after 8:30 pm for the conclusion of our workshop and to answer any remaining questions from participants.
