With education reform on a national level continually bogged down by bureaucracy and red tape, what are ways in which we can reshape and reinvent education to create a more cohesive learning experience that challenges and elevates all aspects of a child? How can we leverage technology to bring major improvements to the classroom, introduce alternative learning models outside of the traditional education system, and create platforms to enhance the learning experience?

Join us on May 30th at 7:00 PM as we explore how K-12 schools and programs are innovating to prepare students for the world ahead. We’ll hear from educators, systems thinkers, and disruptors who will share their insights on trends, challenges, and opportunities in redesigning today’s educational experience for kids. You’ll also have an opportunity to network with like-minded people from the Be Social Change Community and walk away with a better understanding of how we can create an educational system where there is an opportunity for every student, educator, and aspiring entrepreneur to improve the education system and reimagine the future of education.

Emily Helfgot, VP of Learning, Flocabulary

Emily Helfgot has worked in the field of education for more than 20 years as an education director, classroom teacher, curriculum writer, and teaching artist. She has used theater and improvisation to support students writing about their lives with Streetside Stories in San Francisco, worked with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who were starting their NYC teaching careers, and been the education director for The Electric Company and Odd Squad, both PBS shows for early elementary kids. Emily is currently the Vice President of Learning for Flocabulary.


Anjali Balakrishna, VP of Innovation, The Future Project

Anjali Balakrishna currently serves as the VP of Innovation at the Future Project, one of the nation’s fastest growing education nonprofits dedicated to helping young people imagine a better future for themselves and those around them, and bring it to life. For as long as she can remember, Anjali has been a passionate advocate for young people and preparing them with the right skills and mindset to thrive now, and in the future. She began this journey working at her mother’s math and reading business, from teaching 3-4 year olds to read when she was 8, to supporting older students with calculus and advanced reading comprehension throughout high school.

At Yale University, she continued pursuing this love of education from many different angles—from interning at New Haven Public schools and education non-profits, to studying public school architecture from both a historical and contemporary lens, examining the politics of identity and space that live within these buildings. This passion for the intersection of education and design led her to the Future Project, where, through many different roles across the company, she has applied the principles of design and innovation to pioneers new ways to help young people find and fulfill on their purpose since the company’s founding in 2011. This fall, she’ll be leading a major innovation initiative through The Future Project to launch new programmatic offerings that will dramatically increase the scale of TFP’s reach with young people across the country.


Daquan J. Oliver, Founder and CEO, WeThrive

Daquan J. Oliver is the Founder and CEO of WeThrive, which leverages entrepreneurial education for youth of under-resourced communities to create a business venture where they earn real revenues, as they acquire their own advisors/mentors and learn future-ready skills along the way. Growing up in a single-mother, low-income household, Daquan made a promise at age 14 to assist future children in a similar socioeconomic position to become successful and founded WeThrive at the age of 21. Prior to WeThrive, he founded Jossle, a youth marketing agency. Jossle worked with large brands like Zipcar, Uber, and KarmaLoop and amassed a student network of more than 100,000 students nationwide.

At the age of 26, Daquan has been selected to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List, as an Echoing Green Fellow, featured in Boston Business Journal, Pacific Standard, BetaBoston’s 25 Under 25, BostInno’s 25 Under 25, an Ashoka Emerging Innovator, delivered a TEDx Talk on actionable strategies to overcome structural violence, named One of Five Top Black Student Leaders to Watch in 2014 by the Clinton Foundation, and received recognition by Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton for his work.


Ivan Cestero, Social Innovation Coordinator, Avenues: The World School

Ivan is the Social Innovation Coordinator at Avenues: The World School in Chelsea. He teaches entrepreneurship and design and oversees a student-run social innovation startup, Design 4 Impact (, which hosts design challenges in schools, with international partners, and at conferences. Ivan coaches teachers in project-based learning (PBL), design thinking and lean startup, and is bringing the program to Avenues’ next campus in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He thinks students can and should do real world work, in collaboration with professionals, to prepare them for the real world.


Marcos Salazar, CEO, Be Social Change

Marcos Salazar (@marcossalazar) is a social entrepreneurcareer + life coachconsultantspeaker, and community builder. His passion is working with professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives to help them pursue work they are passionate about, build authentic personal brands, become financially successful, and create lives that make the world a better place. He does this through 1-on-1 coachingnonprofit and businesses consulting, and on a larger scale as CEO of Be Social Change where he’s built the largest social impact community and professional development hub in New York City. Marcos earned a B.A. in Psychology from Amherst College as well as a Masters in Organizational Management and an Executive Leadership Coaching certificate from The George Washington University.
