About this event
Join Victoria Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth’s granddaughter, for a delicious dinner buffet and fascinating PowerPoint presentation related to the exhibition, Drawn from Life: Three Generations of Wyeth Figure Studies. The first of four presentations, Victoria Wyeth will focus broadly on the careers of both Andrew Wyeth and his son Jamie Wyeth, exploring how they were inspired to paint the people and worlds around them. While the subjects discussed relate to the exhibition, Victoria Wyeth will go beyond to explore the personal and professional lives of these two master artists.
The Wyeths honed their expertise through rigorous academic exercises conducted both in the studio and in some cases, the morgue. Drawn from Life: Three Generations of Wyeth Figure Studies focuses on N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth’s figurative studio and academic studies and provides a snapshot of young artists mastering the figure. With text by Victoria Wyeth and contributions by her uncle Jamie, the exhibition features many works never-before displayed—Jamie’s anatomical sketches and figure studies, Andrew’s early studio sketches and later painting studies, and N.C.’s academic and studio sketches. Work by Carolyn Wyeth, who was trained by her father N.C. and instructed her nephew Jamie Wyeth, round out the exhibition.
Guest curator Victoria Wyeth provides a family perspective on the work, informed by interviews with her uncle Jamie Wyeth and father Nicholas Wyeth. What is it like to grow-up in a family of artists, who do you learn from, and how to create your own approach to the figure and to art are all explored.
Exhibit sponsored in part by The Clark Foundation, The Tom Morgan and Erna J. McReynolds Charitable Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. Putnam.
This project is supported by a Market New York grant awarded to Fenimore Art Museum from I LOVE NY/New York State’s Division of Tourism as part of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
