ABOUT THE MEETUP

Learn about giving volunteers ownership in the well-being and growth of your organizations by building a Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC). Through balanced representation of various volunteer areas, your VAC can act as a think tank to creatively solve small problems before they become big issues. A VAC creates a valuable connection between staff, volunteers, and board members by maintaining open communication through policy changes, new leadership, and even building renovations.

The Knoxville Museum of Art has had a successful Volunteer Advisory Council for over 18 years; this longevity is achieved by listening to the feedback and concerns of our experienced volunteers. During this hands-on session you will learn how to establish a network that encourages volunteer appreciation, recruitment, and retention.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Chelsea Lloyd has been the Volunteer Coordinator at the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) since July 2018. She was recruited for her insight as an emerging museum professional in a new role working with the Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC). Lloyd acts as the Staff Liaison and Secretary for the VAC and is responsible for following through on the discussions and issues addressed in the VAC meetings. As someone new to the museum volunteer coordinator role, Lloyd brings a fresh outlook and new ideas to the meetings which will be beneficial to other emerging museum professionals in the session.

Kitsy Hartley was recruited because of her extensive experience on the Knoxville Museum of Art Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC) and as a long-term volunteer. Hartley has volunteered with the KMA for over 20 years and has spent the last several years as the Chair for the VAC and speaks on behalf of the volunteers to the KMA Board of Trustees and other committees she has served on. Hartley was instrumental in instigating and securing a vote for the volunteers on the KMA Board of Trustees ensuring equal representation on museum matters. As an active volunteer she understands the importance of volunteer retention as an asset to the institution as both monetary and labor support. Hartley encourages the VAC to provide a safe outlet for volunteers to give feedback which is invaluable in assuring that both volunteers and the institution are benefiting from the experience.

DeLena Feliciano served on the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC) as the Staff Liaison and Secretary from 2012-2018 and continues to serve as the KMA Docent staff representative. Feliciano has worked both as a volunteer and with volunteers over the past 10 years starting as a KMA Front Desk Volunteer, working in Visitor Services, then as Visitor Services Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, and now as the Assistant Director of Education. Feliciano appreciates the network of support that the VAC provides to both staff and volunteers and recognizes the contribution they make to not only volunteer retention, but to the harmony between staff, board, and volunteer relations. Feliciano feels this communication can especially help a new staff member working with volunteers understand and get to know the people they are working with and utilize their skills more effectively.
