ETHICS - Voice of the People: Influencing policy through advocacy - 6 CEUs

Make an Impact on Policy and Practice through Advocacy

Advocacy and organizing provide vehicles through which social workers can connect policy and practice for the purpose of social justice. In fact, it is this social justice connection to the advocacy role that may distinguish social work from other professions. Research has revealed a strong correlation between clinical social work practice, social justice, and advocacy. The focus of this course is to address the concept of advocacy and provide strategies that are instrumental, educational, and practical.

Key objectives for this course include the following:

  • Define advocacy and identify the role of advocacy in social work

  • Frame definitions of advocacy in social work practice

  • Examine how advocacy can empower clients to take or regain control of their lives

  • Discuss promoting change and challenging injustice at individual and systemic levels

  • Rethink the advocacy role as part of the process of ensuring that clients and mental health professionals have a voice in the planning and delivery of services
