Ethics in Practice—Examining Errors: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Course Description: This two hour continuing education course examines medical errors as ethical issues. The history of medical error in our healthcare delivery system and its pervasiveness today is analyzed in the context of both bioethics and the APTA Code of Ethics. Current approaches to identifying, reporting and managing medical errors will be discussed. The ethical duty of the PT/PTA in the prevention and reduction of medical errors is emphasized. Legal issues associated with medical errors will also be addressed.

Target Audience: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lecture, the attendees should be able to:
 Describe the phenomenon of medical errors in our current health care climate in the context of ethical responsibility
 Identify areas of risk for error in daily PT practice
 Relate precautions and contraindications to medical errors in clinical practice as ethical and legal concerns
 Consider scope of practice, specifically related to pharmacologic intervention, to medical errors in PT practice
 Relate medical error information to quality of care initiatives and practice management strategies
 Develop a personal plan for prevention of medical errors that relates to your clinical practice
 Explore resources for error prevention and promoting a culture of safety

Guest Speaker: Brigette Cuffia, Esq.
Brigette Cuffia is Director of Regulatory Affairs in the Office of Corporate Compliance and Privacy at Thomas Jefferson University. Brigette received her Juris Doctorate from the James E. Beasley School of Law at Temple University.. She has a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from Jefferson and was Team Leader on the Stroke and Neurological Disease team at MossRehab for several years.
