Description

ETHICS Implicit Bias in Health Care (6 CEs)

There is extensive evidence and research that finds unconscious biases can lead to differential treatment of patients by race, gender, weight, age, language, income and insurance status.

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.

Everyone has implicit biases, and recognizing them is an important first step to reducing healthcare disparities and promoting fairness and quality outcomes. In this course, we will target the following objectives:

  • Describe the effects of unconscious bias in everyday interactions with patients, students, colleagues, and team members.

  • Address ethics of cultural competencies for licensed mental health practitioners.

  • Apply specific techniques that can be used to reduce bias and its negative consequences for achieving wellness.

  • Identify where personal unconscious biases may reside across gender, race/ethnicity, and/or cultural attributes in the workplace.

  • Develop strategies to correct personal unconscious biases in daily interactions.
