Event description

Description

ETHICS Criminal Law and Mental Illness (6 CEs)

Interaction with the criminal justice system can be difficult even for people without mental illness. The unfortunate reality is that many persons with mental illness come into contact with the criminal justice system frequently and the pressure and intimidation of the criminal process is often overwhelming for persons with mental illness and their families.

The number of people living with mental illness in America’s jails is alarmingly high. According to NAMI, in 44 out of 50 states, prisons and jails hold more individuals with serious mental illness than the largest state hospital and, in local jails, 64% of people experience symptoms of a mental health condition, which represents over 7 million people.

This course is about how people with severe mental illness can be treated more humanely by the criminal justice system without compromising the system’s retributive and crime-prevention functions and the role that mental health professionals play in the criminal justice system. In this course, we will target the following objectives:

  • Highlight and discuss the role of mental illness in the criminal justice system.

  • Address the ethics of cultural competency for licensed mental health practitioners.

  • Discuss the challenges of those living mental illness.

  • Identify the role of mental health professionals in the criminal justice system.

  • Examine criminal law for non-lawyers to give mental health professionals a foundational understanding of criminal law, particularly those laws which disproportionately impact people wtih mental illness.

Instructor: J. Joseph Ingram, JD, MA, MSW has a broad range of social work, HR, compliance, legal, and policy experience in various industries and sectors, including local, state, and federal government.
