Description

Ethics Book Club: Blind spots - Why we fail to do what's right and what to do about it

Please note, you will be required to read the book prior to the event.

When faced with an ethical dilemma, we like to think we would stand up for our principles, but science shows that we are quite capable of committing unethical acts or approving of the dishonest acts of others.

In the book, Blind Spots, leading business ethicists Max Bazerman (Harvard Business School) and Ann Tenbrunsel (Mendoza College of Business) examine the ways we overestimate our ability to do what is right and how we act unethically without meaning to. Spanning many case studies, ranging from the financial services to the tobacco industry, the authors investigate the nature of ethical failures.

Ethics book club is your opportunity to debate meaty ethical dilemmas with your investment industry peers.

For this session, the discussion will focus on:

  • Why do traditional approaches to thinking about ethics often fail to work?
  • Can you reflect back on where you have had blind spots in the past?
  • What tactics, among those suggested by the authors, do you think would be most fruitful for counteracting the impact of blind spots and why?
  • How can you ensure that you are pre-committing to your intended ethical choice?
