Improve your cyber hygiene by learning how to see and think like a hacker with former technology resident Phillip Stearns.

In this two-part master class, we learn the basic concepts of cyber hygiene and ethical hacking with a short introduction about reducing your attack surface. We’ll then preview basic attacks that will be explored in depth in Ethical Hacking II.

The first session focuses on an introduction to basic bash and network related commands. Once we’re familiar with the command line interface, we’ll learn how to write an executable script to show us useful information about the network we’re connected to.

The second session is dedicated to setting up and exploring Kali Linux, the leading distribution for penetration testing with many of the hacking tools needed to learn more about our networked environments.

Price: $50

Materials: Participants will be provided an Ethical Hacking Kit (8 GB USB thumb drive, USB WiFi adapter). Participants are encouraged to bring their own Mac OSX laptops (no portable iOS devices). There are a limited number of computers available at Pioneer Works for those who are unable to bring one.

Audience: No prior hacking or coding experience is necessary. Knowledge of OSX is required.

Phillip Stearns produces both physical and intangible works, performances, and experiences using electronic media. His practice spans several disciplines from creative coding and physical computing to interactive light and sound installations, computational weaving to performances using light and sound.
