Event description

Description

Given the growing population of Muslims in Western societies and the current global political and social climate, it is imperative to develop a better understanding of the mental health needs of this community. This training will address culturally unique aspects of Muslims and will seek to educate mental health and addiction professionals on best practices and ethical considerations when working with this population. Incorporating cultural competence into treatment improves therapeutic decision making and offers alternative ways to define and plan a treatment program that is firmly directed toward progress and recovery—as defined by both the counselor and the client.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to articulate the importance of a multi-cultural view of psychotherapy, highlighting unique aspects of Muslim culture.
  2. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 unique barriers this population faces to obtaining mental health services.
  3. Participants will be able to identify and discuss research supported best practices in order to improve cultural competence with this unique population and decrease stigmatization.
  4. Participants will be able to articulate the importance of values clarification as a key component of a culturally sensitive psychotherapy practice.
  5. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 community resources for practitioners and for clients.
