Et al: The Ultimate Bar Science Night
Anecdotal Evidence + Cafe Scientifique + Curiosity Collider + Nerd Nite
You like science? You like drinking while sciencing? In Vancouver there are many options to get educated and inspired through science, art, and culture in a casual bar setting outside of universities. There's Nerd Nite which focuses on nerdy lectures in the Fox Cabaret, Anecdotal Evidence a science based storytelling show, Curiosity Collider which creates events that bring together artists and scientists, as well as Cafe Scientifique the long running series which focuses on one single speaker to engage in discussions while at the bar.
September 20th at the Fox Cabaret, all four institutions will team for the ultimate bar science night, Et al. This show is one night only, and not to be missed, and plus it's Science Literacy Week to boot!
Featuring:
Jennifer Gardy
Something She Promises Will Be REALLY Interesting
Besides hosting science television shows, Jennifer actually has a real job. As a Senior Scientist at the BC Centre for Disease Control, she uses DNA sequencing to solve outbreaks of infectious disease. Her work touches on everything from diagnosing infections better and faster with DNA, to analyzing how pathogens move through social networks, to how do we talk about Scary Disease That Might Wipe Us All Out. Tonight, she’s going to walk you through a case study of how science plays out in public health and disease control, and that’s all she’s telling you for now* (*but she promises not to actually demonstrate anything with live pathogens. You will not go home with a weird disease tonight. At least after her talk. What you do after is totally up to you.)
Bio: Jennifer Gardy is a Senior Scientist at the BC Centre for Disease Control, and an Assistant Professor in UBC’s School of Population and Public Health, where she is an MSFHR Scholar and holds a Canada Research Chair in Public Health Genomics. When not sequencing tuberculosis genomes, Jenn does a lot of science communication, mostly for CBC Television, where she hosts a few Nature of Things episodes each season. She is a born and raised Vancouverite, and knows her family would be horrified that she’s on stage at The Fox, knowing what the theatre used to be.
Cheryl Wellington: Professor, Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia; Bellydancer. Performer for Neural Constellations - Exploring Connectivity.
Sarah Louadi: Graduate Student, Experimental Medicine at the University of British Columbia; Dancer. Performer for Neural Constellations - Exploring Connectivity.
