SUBMIT YOUR ESTONIAN PASSPORT APPLICATION IN MELBOURNE

Ms Katrin Kanarik, the Consul General of Estonia in Sydney, is coming to Melbourne to collect passport applications and certify on-site fingerprint scans, on 8 and 9 March 2014.

This opportunity comes only once a year. Normally, you have to fly to Sydney (Estonia or the nearest Estonian Embassy) to lodge your passport application. It doesn't matter if you're after your first passport, or need to renew your expired or lost passport, you normally cannot do it in Melbourne. (except children under 12 yo). The law changed 1-July-2009 when fingerprint scan became compulsory with all new passport applications submitted more than 23 months from the date your fingerprint scan was last recorded.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is designed to help people only to lodge their applications, not to provide a consulting service or to be a social function. You are kindly requested to have the following ready and handy when you come to see the Consul General...

1. Application form, which is filled out in clear, legible print. We recommend completing the form on your computer screen first, and then printing it out for signing.

The application form is only available in Estonian. If you don't understand Estonian, or the English instructions, there is help and blank forms available on the spot.

2. Passport photo, which has a stricter format than Australian Passport photos. See the requirements here ... http://www.politsei.ee/en/teenused/isikut-toendavad-dokumendid/eesti-kodaniku-pass/taiskasvanule/oluline-info-passitaotlejale.dot#varvifoto

3. Proof of your Estonian Citizenship. This can be one of the following documents:

  • your expired or expiring Estonian passport
  • your Estonian ID card
  • copy of your lost/stolen passport plus a secondary form of ID
  • certificate of return to Estonia
  • Documentation proving you acquired the citizenship at birth (see #6 below)

4. A valid identification document, with your photo, full name, birth date and signature. E.g.  your current Australian passport or Australian Driver's Licence.

5. Stamp duty (state fee) of approximately $93 AUD (for passport) or $123 (for passport and ID-card), in cash. The exact sum depends on Euro exchange rate.

6. If you acquired your Estonian citizenship at birth, but neither you or your parents are registered in the Population Register of Estonia, you must provide officially documented proof of these 2 facts...

(A) Evidence that your parent or grandparent was a citizen of Estonia between 1918 and 1940. This can be done with an old, original document from the above period, issued in Estonia, or with a recent, certified archive search result from Estonia. Please ask the Consulate General in Sydney for detailed instructions.

(B) Evidence that you are a direct and legal child or grandchild of that person. This must be done using birth certificates, which need to be Apostilled by the country of birth. Please ask the Consulate General in Sydney for more information if needed.

IMPORTANT! APOSTILLING A DOCUMENT IS A SEPARATE PROCESS FROM ISSUING A DOCUMENT (e.g. birth certificate). IT'S DONE BY A SEPARATE GOVT OFFICE, FOR A SEPARATE FEE. IT TAKES A FEW DAYS TO GET THE APOSTILLE STAMP. IF YOU COME WITH YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE NOT APOSTILLED, YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED!

Please allow enough time and be patient. If you need help checking your supporting documentation, please contact your nearest Honorary Consul or Consulate General in Sydney. The list is available at http://protocol.dfat.gov.au/Consulate/view.rails?id=65

We're looking forward to seeing you and helping you to get your Estonian Passport!
