Event description

Description

This workshop will offer 9 practical, easy to use, engaging strategies for teaching academic vocabulary. These research driven, brain-based strategies will help all students attack higher order thinking tasks by better understanding key academic and domain specific vocabulary. During the workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to both practice the strategies in depth as well as create materials that match the needs of their students. The workshop will be useful, fast-paced, and fun.

All participants will receive a lists of critical vocabulary words arranged by grade level (plus additional words for math and science) as well as a comprehensive handout and access to free materials that can be used right away in classrooms.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants will be able to…

1. Identify critical general and domain specific vocabulary for their grade level

2. Understand the important role vocabulary plays in learning, retaining knowledge, reading, writing, and problem solving

3. Apply 6 or more of the strategies modeled in workshop

4. Create original materials for use in the classroom

In this dynamic and extremely practical workshop, teachers learn how to dramatically improve narrative writing with powerful oral, kinesthetic, and written exercises that show all students (especially ELL) how to build an effective story. It’s a natural fit for Common Core Literacy Standards because the workshop uses text models to connect and develop reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. In the workshop, the presenter will describe four ideas to improve narrative writing, expand on those ideas with demonstrations and activities, and provide strategies that educators can apply to their writing lessons.

All participants will receive a comprehensive handout full of teaching resources as well as ready-to-use on line materials like the PDF version of the book of Tell a Story about a Time by Bill Atwood

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants will be able to…

1. Identify, break down, and communicate the features of effective narration to students

2. Learn and use 4 critical strategies to improve narrative writing

3. Develop lesson plans and implementation plans for a year’s worth of narrative writing

4. Extend narrative writing across the curriculum in science and social studies
