Synthesis of Science and Spirituality for Peace and Harmony (SSSPH) 2018 ESSAY COMPETITION
The inaugural ASEAN Essay Competition on the Synthesis of Science and Spirituality is held in conjunction with the conference on the Synthesis of Science and Spirituality for Peace and Harmony to be held in Singapore on September 22, 2018.
This essay competition is organised for students and youth, the future leaders of the world, who are ASEAN citizens or studying in institutions in ASEAN member nations. It is the first time such a competition is being held in Singapore, where young minds are invited to share their ideas and vision regarding the synthesis of science and spirituality for peace and harmony. You may choose to work alone or grab a friend and put on your thinking caps together!
Registration for the essay competition has been extended to August 7, 2018. Entries must be submitted by August 15, 2018.
Essay Topic
Your essay can be about any one of the two topics listed below. There is a short discussion that should help you prepare your essay as you address the topic. You do not have to use the same wordings for the title, but your essay should cover the main concepts of the topic.

Essay Competition Structure
1.1 The Competition is divided into Student and Tertiary/Adult categories. Wards and relatives of members of the organisers are INELIGIBLE to participate in this competition.
1.2 Student Category
The Student Category is open to Singapore citizens or students in Singapore below 20 years old (as on January 1, 2018). These include students enrolled in local and international schools in Singapore below the undergraduate level, irrespective of their nationality.
1.3 Tertiary/Adult Category
The Tertiary/Adult Category is open to citizens of ASEAN, or students of tertiary institutions in any ASEAN member country, who are below 35 years old (as on January 1, 2018).
1.4 The top five (5) entries for each category will be invited to make a presentation at the conference on October 6, 2018, after which the winners will be announced.
1.5 For participants in the Tertiary/Adult Category, who are not studying and/or living in Singapore, and whose entries have been identified to present at the conference, travel and accommodation arrangements will be made by the organisers for them to attend the conference in Singapore.
1.6 The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into by the judges in relation to that decision.
Prizes
2.1 prizes awarded to the winners are as follows:
Student Category
• First Prize: S$400
• First Runner Up: S$200
• Second Runner Up: S$100
• Two Merit Prizes: S$50 each
• Trophies and certificates for all five winning entries
Tertiary/Adult Category
• First Prize: S$500
• First Runner Up: S$250
• Second Runner Up: S$150
• Two Merit Prizes: S$50 each
• Trophies and certificates for all five winning entries
2.2 All participants will be awarded a soft copy of a certificate of participation by the organisers.
2.3 The top 10 to 20 entries for each category, as determined by the organisers, will have their essay entries published in a compendium published and distributed at the conference. Copies of the book will be sent to them by post or given in person for those attending the conference.
