ESL Workshop: Supporting English Learners' Language & Literacy

The ESL Workshop draws on years of experience in classrooms to provide answers to teachers' most common questions about supporting English learners' language and literacy development in English speaking classrooms. During this workshop, attendees will be offered practical ideas, research-based tips, and classroom examples for supporting English learners during whole group, small group and independent work time. The workshop will begin with instructional modifications to maximize learning for English learners in grade-level contexts. The characteristics of the English learners' development and stages of proficiency will be presented with instructional ideas for differentiation. Practical strategies for scaffolding vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking and listening across will be presented with classroom examples. Assessment possibilities and considerations for identifying the differences between language proficiency, literacy proficiency, and developmental progress will be addressed. Drawing on the formal and informal assessments, ideas for effective instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking will be presented with model lessons, student examples, and classroom videos.
