Equanimity

A one day retreat with Manny Mansbach

Saturday, October 20, 2018; 9:30am-4:30pm

Suggested contribution: $25-50 registration + teacher donation

“Develop a mind that is vast like space, where experiences both pleasant and unpleasant can appear and disappear without conflict, struggle or harm. Rest in a mind like a vast sky.” ~the Buddha

Given the uncertainty in our lives and the challenging world around us, how do we find and sustain our balance? One answer is that we can develop a heart that is ready for anything. A hallmark of Buddhist practice is working to expand the range of life experiences in which we are free. Equanimity is a reliable wisdom and liberation practice we can establish and nurture to help the mind become firmer and less reactive. When the mind is able to recognize “this is how things are now” with some stability, we can move into decision-making and relationships with greater clarity about when and where we can and can’t effectively influence things. We can be touched by world events and other people, do our absolute best and learn to let go of attachment to outcome.

This daylong is open to beginning and experienced meditators. It will consist of talks, meditations, and discussion about equanimity practice on and off the cushion.

“Equanimity teaches us how to stand in the midst of an uncontrollable and uncertain life with a heart that cannot be shattered. What it means to cultivate a mind and heart of boundless stability in the midst of the unstable. To be able to live in a way where we can respond, can be awake. To be awake, yet not drained.” ~Christina Feldman

*Our teachers give freely of their time, wisdom, and experience and depend upon contributions from students for their livelihood. We recommend an equal or greater donation to the teacher than for registration.

Manny Mansbach has been practicing and studying Insight Meditation since 1980. He is a graduate both of Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Dedicated Practitioner Program and its Community Dharma Leader Program, and is the former Director of the Center for Somatic Psychotherapy in San Francisco. In recent years, Manny has spent many months in silent meditation retreats, and has practiced and been on pilgrimage in India, Tibet, Nepal, Burma and Thailand. In addition to studying with revered western Insight Meditation teachers, he has also been influenced by Dzogchen and the teachings of Adyashanti. Manny is committed to helping people remember and express their basic goodness, and to gain confidence in the beauty and power of the Buddha’s teachings of profound understanding and boundless kindness. One of his greatest interests is applying the Buddha’s Middle Way to the area of communication, integrating the core skill of nonviolent assertion and learning to speak from wisdom and with kindness.
