In its 10th year anniversary, EPIC Ministry is excited to host its next retreat on the BIG ISLAND, "Kūlia I Ka Nu'u," from June 30-July 3, 2023, at the Pahala Plantation Cottages.

This phrase become a popular motto associated with Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. Signed on the back of a photo of which would be his last climb, it beautiful encapsulates Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati's love for mountaineering and Catholic outlook on life.

This 4th of July weekend, EPIC Ministry takes a local spin on exploring and reflecting on the life of this young adult saint for a 4-day retreat on the island of Hawai'i (Big Island).

The Island of Hawai'i is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is home to all but four of the world's climate zones with snow-capped mountains to tropical rainforest. The Big Island attracts many visitors due to its historical and geological sites including two of the world's active volcanoes.

The retreat site will be at the Pahala Plantation cottages. The site is made up of a restored sugar mansion and houses in a quiet town between Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. These dwellings were once homes for the sugar plantation workers and managers, as well as teachers at the local school until 1996 when Ka‘u Sugar Co. gave way to new agriculture.

During our time here we may also visit and experience the following beautiful sites and attractions:

• Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
• Mauna Kea
• South Point
• St. Benedict's - The Painted Church

This weekend retreat will feature presentation, prayer and reflection, group activities, and of course, fun and fellowship in our EPIC way. This special retreat will also include numerous sightseeing opportunities! It's a time to get away from the busyness and craziness of life in order to let loose a little, let go, and let God!

Two retreat packages are available:

• All-Inclusive (Includes air transportation to and from Honolulu)
• Air-Excluded (Meet at Pahala, Big Island on Friday evening)

Deposit of 50% (before eligible promotions) upon registration is required to secure slot. Full payment is due two weeks prior to the event. EPIC credits from fundraisers can be used to purchase a ticket. Contact Malcolm at info@epicministry.net for balances and to use funds.

FAQs

What is the registration cost and deadline?

The final deadline for registration is FRIDAY, JUNE 16.  Below is the list of registration costs (excluding processing fees):

Registration (All-Inclusive): from $639

Includes round-trip airfare from Honolulu, transportation, lodging, meals, and retreat fees. Departs from Honolulu International Airport on Friday, June 30, morning. Includes spending the day in Hilo before checking into Pahala Plantation Cottages

Registration (Air-Excluded): $500

Includes transportation*, lodging, meals, and retreat fees.  Flight arrangements need to be made on your own.  *Own transportation required to Pahala Plantation Cottages. Retreat officially begins at 6 pm, Friday, June 30.

How do I register?

Simply click the green "Tickets" button on this page.  If you register through this site, you need a valid credit card to reserve your space.

Can I pay by check or cash?

At this time, we are only accepting online payments with a valid credit card to reserve your space. Cash and check may be accepted on future payments. However, the initial payment MUST be online through Eventbrite.

Do I need to pay in full?  Are there installment plans?

Payment can occur in full or in two installments. To secure your spot, you must place a 50% deposit (before eligible promotions) via Eventbrite. A separate invoice will be issued for the remaining balance which is due by June 16th. EPIC credits from fundraisers can be used to purchase a ticket. Failure to submit payment by deadlines may result in forfeiture of slot.

What if I register but cannot attend?  Am I able to get a refund?

NO.  It is general policy that the retreat is non-refundable as it impacts certain group prices, deposits or other costs that are made that we cannot get refunded.  This retreat also cannot be prorated for the same reasons.

Who can attend?

This is a retreat for young adults, which means it is open to anyone between the ages of 18-39 years old.

What if I can only attend part of the retreat?

It is strongly encouraged and recommended that all participants stay for the entirety of the weekend.  We also understand that there may be circumstances that prevent you from being able to do so.  Because this is a voluntary retreat for adults, you have the ability to leave if necessary.  However, the registration costs remain the same and cannot be prorated or refunded.

If I can only stop by briefly, is it ok if I just visit?

We understand that we periodically have visitors join us.  However, out of respect for those who sacrificed their time and resources for this retreat, any visitor who is unregistered and stays for an extended time will be asked to register for the retreat, which includes the full registration cost, or may be asked to excuse themselves from the retreat.

During some of the off-site portions of the retreat, we may allow visitors to join in. However, transportation will not be available for unregistered participants.

Do I need to bring my printed ticket from Eventbrite to the retreat?

NO. If you register through Eventbrite, we will automatically add your name to the participant list and you will simply need to check-in when you arrive.

What is EPIC Ministry?

E.P.I.C. stands for "Ever Present In Christ".

We are a peer ministry of young adults, ages 18-39, with a deep desire to know, love, and serve the Lord.

EPIC Ministry is rooted in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and shares its charism with the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (focusing on community and mission).

Our mission is simple: "To empower young adults to follow Christ by spiritual, social, and service paths."
