How to use environmental approaches including policy, enforcement, and communication as part of comprehensive substance use and misuse.

About this Event

This workshop will introduce the range of evidence-based environmental strategies designed to reduce alcohol-related problems in the community. The training will highlight how to use environmental approaches including policy, enforcement, and communication as part of a comprehensive substance use and misuse prevention plan. This training will utilize a combination of presentation and group discussions to identify and address the relevant considerations for the use of environmental approaches around specific challenges related to assessment, capacity, planning, implementation with fidelity, and evaluation.

Morning

• Define environmental strategies

• Explain the role and benefits of environmental strategies in a comprehensive prevention approach

• Assessing community conditions and identifying risk factors that can be addressed using environmental strategies

• Link risk factors and community conditions using a logic model

• Discussion: Elements to consider when assessing community prevention needs, readiness, and capacity

• Discussion: Coaching prevention providers to take the necessary steps to develop and formalize partnerships critical to this type of work

Afternoon

• Creating synergy between communication, policy and enforcement strategies

• Apply a selection process to identify appropriate environmental strategies

• Understanding levers of change and the implications for implementing these strategies with relevant dose, reach, frequency, and fidelity

• Identify process, short-term, and intermediate outcomes for selected strategies

• Multi-component programs combine environmental prevention strategies with each other or with individual- or family-level change strategies.

• Collaboration among different community sectors (e.g., public health, education, business, law enforcement) to design, raise awareness of, and/or implement program activities.

• Discussion: Developing an action plan for implementing environmental strategies

• Discussion: Coaching for coalitions or community project directors to develop comprehensive plans

Speaker Bio: Chuck Klevgaard is a nationally recognized expert in substance misuse prevention, public health, and school-based health. Drawing on his experience in collective impact and prevention-focused partnerships, he builds the capacity of states, tribes, schools, communities, and cities to use evidence-based substance misuse prevention and intervention strategies. He specializes in behavioral health support; training and technical assistance; and evidence-based alcohol, opioid, and substance misuse programs and policies. As Prevention Manager with the Great Lakes Prevention Technology Transfer Center, Klevgaard provides training and technical assistance to substance misuse prevention entities within the Great Lakes region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio.
