Program Description: Through a three-day, face-to-face session followed by homework and online assignments and interaction, the Environmental Justice Academy (Academy) will cultivate skills so that participants may successfully identify environmental challenges and accomplish sustainable, community environmental improvement goals. Course materials and presentations include environmental laws and regulations, community capacity building, strategic partnerships, replication of best practices, United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the EcoDistricts Model for community revitalization. Students will learn project management, program evaluation, and resource management skills. After completing the Academy, participants will attend a capstone event on May 10, 2019, where they will present a project which demonstrates skills learned through the Academy. Collegiate students may be accompanied by their faculty mentor.

The EJ Academy will introduce students to the EcoDistricts Model, a global performance standard that empowers sustainable neighborhood and district-scale development. It will also introduce EPA’s Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS) Model, a seven-step process for creating positive change and community revitalization by having community leaders, community members and stakeholders work together.
